I recently joined a sports performance gym and found out something very interesting. Most (if not all) of the students who use this gym did almost 100% of their training on functional exercises (ankle bands, fitness balls, core workouts, jumping exercises, balance work). The gym does have strength machines, but it seems as though old timers like me (and the noon senior class) are the only ones who use them. Balance boards, fitness balls, and kettle bells are in favor know because they improve muscle strength, balance, and range of motion with a lot less expense than a traditional weight circuit. It would be interesting to hear from wellness and fitness professionals as to what they train on, and what they use with their clients? What say you??
