Promoting Simple Wellness Practices to Save Money PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0

I recently joined a sports performance gym and found out something very interesting. Most (if not all) of the students who use this gym did almost 100% of their training on functional exercises (ankle bands, fitness balls, core workouts, jumping exercises, balance work). The gym does have strength machines, but it seems as though old timers like me (and the noon senior class) are the only ones who use them.

Balance boards, fitness balls, and kettle bells are in favor know because they improve muscle strength, balance, and range of motion with a lot less expense than a traditional weight circuit. It would be interesting to hear from wellness and fitness professionals as to what they train on, and what they use with their clients?  What say you??

Exercise IS the new Avenue of Care in Cancer Therapy PDF Print E-mail

In the mid 1990s, health clubs and hospitals began working with cancer survivors at many stages of recovery. Over the past decade, the research in this area of sports medicine has clearly shown that strength and endurance training with cancer patients improves stamina (reduces fatigue), improves overall quality of life, and may impact cancer recovery - such as reducing the incidence of lymphedema, and reducing cancer recurrence.

There are a growing number of cancer exercise programs across the US, and more trainers and wellness center directors are interested in programming for this special population group. Cancer trainers successfully work with cancer survivors and do they know the limitations of different types of cancers (breast, prostate, etc), and stages (stage I or advanced stage IV) while programming for them?  What say you??

Wellness and Senior Care PDF Print E-mail

In an era when wellness and fitness services are moving into every conceivable area of movement (Pilates, balance, core training, yoga, fitness ball, etc.), why not exercise seniors at home?  According to the national home care association, there will be an increase of over 30% of adults over 65 years of age (over 30 million) living at home, and needing all kinds of services.

Should fitness be a part of this health care team? Using specific balance and strength exercises, trainers and wellness can improve health, reduce the risk of falling injuries, and increase range of motion in persons of any age.  There are a few companies who are catering to this growing trend, and it would be interesting to hear from trainers who are working in this area of wellness care.

Obtaining Reimbursement for Worker's Compensation Health Services PDF Print E-mail

You really should be getting your dues for wellness programs. As of recently, some California worker's compensation insurance companies are reimbursing for health and wellness programs.  Why? First - the cost of wellness services are inherently less than traditional medical / therapy services. Second  - over the last decade, wellness has proven its outcomes with both improved health and lower health care costs associated with its use. Third - insurance companies need to save money.

Wellness makes sense, and it's important to remember that the contract is between the insurance company AND the customer (patient). The trends clearly are moving in the direction of  "fee - for - wellness"  What say you??
